Have a crunchy Iftari

Introduction

Sharing a very simple yet tasty fried fish recipe on the blog today. Try it and spread the happiness to your loved ones. All you need: Fish, flour, egg, lemon, vinegar & spices. #BringItOn

When I was young, we used to sing this nasty poem:

Mind your own business

Fry your own fish

Don’t poke your dirty nose

Into my clean dish

I couldn’t resist typing this here. But I remember it still because it makes so much sense. Interfering is something I dislike a lot. Coming back to the topic, normally, when I cook, I use almost no oil. So I try to avoid recipes which deep fry. Unless it comes to Pakoras and Fried Fish. And if it is Ramzan, it calls for a celebration!

Ramzan is the perfect time to share the yummiest fried fish recipe. I had got this recipe from my cousin Daniyal @danyal1999 and added a few ingredients in it. It is really simple and doesn’t require much hard work. I prefer to prepare for all my cooking in advance so I don’t have to do too much in the end. So preparing the batter and keeping it refrigerated overnight or for a few hours before frying is a good idea as it keeps it all together while frying. Here we go!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup – All purpose flour
  • 1 tsp – Baking powder
  • 1 tsp – Salt
  • 400 g – Fish fillets (Haddock, cod, red snapper… Any)
  • 1 tsp – Crushed red chillies
  • 1 – Egg
  • 1 tsp – Lemon juice
  • 1 tsp – Vinegar
  • 1 tsp – Green herbs (Coriander, Oregano, Parsley. Whatever is available at home)
  • 1/2 tsp pepper (optional)
  • 1 cup- Cold water

Method

  1. Put an egg in a mixing bowl. Whisk it with a fork and mix in all other ingredients (except fish).
  2. Mix all ingredients into a smooth paste.
  3. Put fish pieces into batter. Pierce them with fork and mix them in the batter.
  4. Cover the dish and leave it in the fridge for a few hours (or overnight).
  5. Deep fry pieces on both sides until cooked.
  6. Take them out on newspaper and remove excess oil by kitchen towel before serving.

Conclusion

Do try this recipe out. It is my personal favourite. The recipe is easy and flexible. You can add or subtract ingredients as you like. I can’t wait for you to try it out and tell me how it was. Happy Iftar!

Some seasons of life change you forever. Divorce. Losing a parent. Immigration. Sickness. These are the moments that reshape you… the moments that stretch your heart in ways you never imagined.

Therapy has helped me navigate these storms with gentleness 🌸 — therapy in general. And I’ve learned that healing feels safer when you speak to someone who understands your culture, your faith, and your values… someone who truly gets where you come from.

If you’re navigating your own storm, you don’t have to carry it alone. Shifa Therapy offers compassionate, culturally aware support for women walking through grief, trauma, motherhood, and life abroad. If you feel called to reach out, Shifa Therapy might be a gentle place to begin. 🌙
